Say Yes to Life: An Accessible Primer on Nietzsche’s Big Ideas

nietzsche

Friedrich Nietzsche introduced several ideas into Western philosophy that have had a huge influence on the culture of the 20th and 21st centuries. Existentialism, postmodernism, and poststructuralism have all been touched by Nietzsche’s work.
His impact isn’t just seen in academic philosophies, though, but also in the way many modern Westerners approach their lives. The love of struggle, the quest for autonomy and personal greatness, the clarion call of following your passion and making your life a work of art — these are all cultural currents Nietzsche helped shape and set in motion. Thus to really understand modern life in all its wonder, and weirdness, one must understand Nietzsche.
Below I highlight just a few of Nietzsche’s biggest and most intriguing ideas; even if you decide you vehemently disagree with them, they are excellent fodder for examining how you live and exist in the world. Do you, as Nietzsche exhorts, “say yes to life”? Or do you deny its powers and possibilities and simply loaf through your existence?
Keep in mind that this article isn’t an exhaustive look at Nietzsche’s work; it’s designed to be an accessible primer for those who wish to dip their toes into his philosophy. As such, I tried to simplify and condense the explanations as much as possible. For a more exhaustive and in-depth treatment, you’ll have to read the myriad books that have been written by Nietzsche and about his work; I’ll suggest some of the best to check out at the end.

Apollo and Dionysus

In Nietzsche’s first published work, The Birth of Tragedy, he describes two divergent outlooks embodied by the ancient Greeks: the Apollonian and the Dionysian. Together, Nietzsche argues, these two ethoses birthed one of the world’s most famous art forms — the Athenian tragedy.
Apollo was the sun god who brought light and rational clarity to the world. For Nietzsche, those who view things through an Apollonian lens see the world as orderly, rational, and bounded by definite borders. The Apollonian views humanity not as an amorphous whole, but as discrete and separate individuals. Sculpture and poetry were the arts best represented by the Apollonian ethos because they have clear structures and defined lines.
Dionysus was the god of wine, celebration, ritual madness, and festivity. Viewed through the Dionysian prism, the world is seen as chaotic, passionate, and free from boundaries. Instead of seeing humanity as being made up of atomized individuals, the Dionysian views humanity as a united, passionate, amorphous whole into which the self is absorbed. Music and dance, with their free-flowing forms, were the arts best represented by the Dionysian ethos.
For Nietzsche, the pre-Socratic Greek tragedies fused these two outlooks together perfectly. The works of Sophocles and Aeschylus forced the audience to answer one of life’s most burning questions: “How can human life be meaningful if human beings are subject to undeserving suffering and death?” The Apollonian answers this query by arguing that suffering brings forth a transformation — chaos can be turned into beauty and order. The Dionysian, on the other hand, contends that dynamism and chaos are not necessarily bad things. Simply being part of the chaotic flow of life and joyfully riding its waves was a beautiful and worthy pursuit in and of itself; any suffering that came along with the ride was simply the price of admission.
Nietzsche argued that after Socrates, tragedies began to emphasize the Apollonian ethos at the expense of the Dionysian. Instead of seeing tragedy as the natural result of living in a world of chaos and passion, the post-Socratic dramatists saw it as the consequence of some “tragic flaw” in a person’s character. Nietzsche believed this more “rationalized” view of tragedy extinguished some of life’s mystery and romanticism.
While this theory may seem very specific to a certain time, place, and art form, it has far wider implications. It’s important to have a basic understanding of the two concepts because they’re woven throughout the rest of Nietzsche’s work. For Nietzsche, the Dionysian perspective was the more life-affirming and vitality-spurring approach to life; consequently, he emphasizes it over the Apollonian.
Besides the Dionysian and Apollonian archetypes, Nietzsche looked to other Ancient Greek ideas to inform his worldview. He was particularly fond of the pre-Socratic Greeks and their Homeric warrior ethics. Strength, courage, boldness, and pride were virtues that Nietzsche championed throughout his life.

The Language of the Birds

This video takes listening to an Alan Watts lecture to a whole new level. I’d like to see this done with the likes of Terence Mckenna, Tim Leary, Robert Anton Wilson, Sri Krishnamurti and Manly P. Hall. How bout it?

SHUT UP OR STAND UP!

- --- a fragment. Transcribed from a cassette tape recording made at a seance in 1973.

"I PICK THE GOD DAMN terror of the fucking gods out of my nose! Pardon my language. But YEEEEEHAW, let the sons of God and man bear witness! Even in the belly of the Thunderbird I've been casting out the False Prophets; I'm busting a gut and blowing my O-ring, and ripe to throw a LOAF! For I speak only the fucking Truth, and never in my days have I spoken other than! For my every utterance is a lie, including this very one you hear! I say, `Fuck'em if they can't take a joke!' By God, `Anything for a laugh', I say. I am the last remaining Homo Correctus, I am the god damn Man of the Future! I'll drive a mile so as not to walk a foot; I am a human being of the first god damn water!

Yes, I'm the javelina humping junkie that jumped the Men from Mars! I drank the Devil under seven tables, I am too intense to die, I'm insured for acts o' God and Satan! I was shanghaied by bodiless fiends and alien jews from a corporate galaxy, and got away with their hubcaps! I cannot be tracked on radar! I wear nothing uniform, I wear NO god damn uniform! Yes baby, I'm 23 feet tall and have 13 rows o' teats; I was suckled by a triceratops, I gave the Anti-Virgin a high-protein tonsil wash! I'm a bacteriological weapon, I armed and loaded! I'm a fission reactor, I fart plutonium, power plants are fueled by the sweat from my brow; when they plug me in, the lights go out in Hong Kong! I weigh 666 pounds in zero gravity, come and get me! The Flow To Go

Poetic licence rules with an iron fist when they unite their energies, Neptune dissolves and diffuses Saturn concretises and defines. ‘Holding it all together’ and ‘going with the flow’ are no longer hippy mantras but mutually bound necessities that must find a synthesis. For us the computer screen world has become a worm-hole into the universes of the imagination and these in turn become real by virtue of the underlying force of their emotional impact.

Sophia is The Key

Who is Sophia?

I am the first and the last. I am the honored one and the scorned one.
I am the whore, and the holy one. I am the wife and the virgin.
I am the mother and the daughter….I am she whose wedding is great,
and I have not taken a husband….I am knowledge, and ignorance.
THUNDER, PERFECT MIND, Gnostic poem, 100 A.D.

Sophia is a central figure of the Gnostic texts and is a central figure in the Odes of Solomon found in the Gnostic text, Pistis Sophia. Every mystical branch of every religion refers to her. She is universal.

Sophia is that part of humanity that gives us unlimited power. The part that is coveted by the Masters of The Elite. An ability they do not have nor can they hope to attain. The ability that can bring them down through proper use and meditation. Sophia can and will begin to reverse the damage once you have contacted that part of you. Humanity joining together and using the gifts bestowed to us is all it takes. Learn this knowledge and pass it on.

The early Judeo-Christian Gnostics referred to her as the Wisdom of God. She is God’s feminine half—the compassionate side. She is the Holy Ghost, the Logos, Word, or Tao. She is Universal Intelligence projected into this realm by the First Manifested described in Gnostic Cosmology. She originates from regions outside time and space; from the world of the Shamans—the unconscious. She is infinite intelligence and wisdom always providing guidance and help to those who ask. Because she is beyond space and time, she is the source of synchronistic events and exists just behind the veil. Sophia sends us messages in dreams, often found through archetypal symbols found in mythology and alchemy. In psychological terms, von Franz describes her as representing the collective unconscious as “the sum of all the original idea patterns of reality.” (von Franz, Alchemy, p.184)

In St. Thomas Aquinas’s alchemical treatise, Aurora consurgens, Sophia seeks the human being who is worthy of her. She whispers in our ears in those quiet moments when we are still, to come and draw near. “Leave the ways of the Corruptor, and come near to me and I will enter into you and make you wise in the way of Truth.” (Ode to Solomon, p. 146) This represents the mystical marriage of our soul with the godhead. It represents the merging of our consciousness with our ‘diamond body’ by turning off the ‘out-flowing’ of our individual will. Once this happens we will possess a higher state of awareness and gradually melt and merge into something else—our beloved.

Fight Evil, Do Not Let It Fill You

Do not carry the poison of evil within yourself

In a world filled with evil, as you can see everywhere, there is a tendency of identification with it, and its penetration into your depths. If you succumb to its influence and begin to carry it within yourselves, even from motivation to fight it, you will get nowhere, but to become the bearer of evil, hatred, revenge, jealousy, etc.

Thus, your creative energy is tied into a tight knot with evil instead of trying to find some creative solutions that are always there, but instead enter in the fight against evil, and thus identify with it. Your very being is simply poisoned by this senseless reaction, and you are drawn into the process of "struggle", not seeing that it simply drains you and redirects your creative energy into dead end direction.

Yes, to fight the evil is a noble task. But only if you do not fill your soul with it. Revenge and hatred does not solve anything. But the fight for Life, your mother, brother, friend, wife, and children - is another matter. Because you are not fighting just from hate, but in the name of Good and Life, and thus clear the your house from trash and dirt of evil. And trash and dirt certainly stand in your way, and therefore to cleanse your house out of love for your neighbor, and for Life itself, creativity and prosperity is worthy of

your energy.

But this struggle will bring real benefits, leading to Good, only if it is carried out with AWARENESS, with clarity of mind, but not from blind rage and hate, greed, envy and blind denial. Otherwise, you yourself will become that evil dragon, you were trying to defeat, as it is said in the story of wisdom about the evil dragon.

Try to look for solutions, not just to fight. And it does not matter how small and "insignificant" your contribution may seem to you. Any decision, any genuine progress is a part of a larger solution. Trust yourself. Perfection is sitting right inside of yourselves, no matter of how "big" or "small it may seem to you."

It is necessary to disseminate quality information that reveals the essence, to organize yourselves into groups to propose the legislative bills, write the statements, without worrying about how effective they may turn out to be, to think about constructive solutions to existing problems, and bring up the legal complaints against the bearers of evil in all courts. Because this is probably one of the most effective methods. And the evidence you have is MOUNTAINOUS. Just Dig. It is ALL there "in the house of a good host."

Our Truth Writ

The message of our truth writ and read in the manifestation of the world around us: where the circulation of our blood travels the same paths as “the circling course of the stars” above us.

The Secret Manifesto of The Shadow Government

An illusion it will be, so large, so vast it will escape their perception.

Those who will see it will be thought of as insane.

We will create separate fronts to prevent them from seeing the connection between us.

We will behave as if we are not connected to keep the illusion alive. Our goal will be accomplished one drop at a time so as to never bring suspicion upon ourselves. This will also prevent them from seeing the changes as they occur.

We will always stand above the relative field of their experience for we know the secrets of the absolute.

We will work together always and will remain bound by blood and secrecy. Death will come to he who speaks.

We will keep their lifespan short and their minds weak while pretending to do the opposite.

We will use our knowledge of science and technology in subtle ways so they will never see what is happening.

We will use soft metals, aging accelerators and sedatives in food and water, also in the air.

They will be blanketed by poisons everywhere they turn.

The soft metals will cause them to lose their minds. We will promise to find a cure from our many fronts, yet we will feed them more poison.

The poisons will be absorbed trough their skin and mouths, they will destroy their minds and reproductive systems.

From all this, their children will be born dead, and we will conceal this information.

The poisons will be hidden in everything that surrounds them, in what they drink, eat, breathe and wear.

We must be ingenious in dispensing the poisons for they can see far.

We will teach them that the poisons are good, with fun images and musical tones.

Those they look up to will help. We will enlist them to push our poisons.

They will see our products being used in film and will grow accustomed to them and will never know their true effect.

When they give birth we will inject poisons into the blood of their children and convince them its for their help.
We will start early on, when their minds are young, we will target their children with what children love most, sweet things.

When their teeth decay we will fill them with metals that will kill their mind and steal their future.

When their ability to learn has been affected, we will create medicine that will make them sicker and cause other diseases for which we will create yet more medicine.

We will render them docile and weak before us by our power.

They will grow depressed, slow and obese, and when they come to us for help, we will give them more poison.
We will focus their attention toward money and material goods so they many never connect with their inner self. We will distract them with fornication, external pleasures and games so they may never be one with the oneness of it all.

Their minds will belong to us and they will do as we say. If they refuse we shall find ways to implement mind-altering technology into their lives. We will use fear as our weapon.

We will establish their governments and establish opposites within. We will own both sides.

We will always hide our objective but carry out our plan.

They will perform the labor for us and we shall prosper from their toil.

Our families will never mix with theirs. Our blood must be pure always, for it is the way.

We will make them kill each other when it suits us.

We will keep them separated from the oneness by dogma and religion.

We will control all aspects of their lives and tell them what to think and how.

We will guide them kindly and gently letting them think they are guiding themselves.

We will foment animosity between them through our factions.

When a light shall shine among them, we shall extinguish it by ridicule, or death, whichever suits us best.

We will make them rip each other's hearts apart and kill their own children.

We will accomplish this by using hate as our ally, anger as our friend.

seriously, is everything ok?

Because I didn't know, and I thought that maybe by laughing he would forget what . i mean he's always quiet maybe i just got too used to him just being there. Maybe if i'd just taken a few seconds and asked, "seriously, is everything ok?" If your friend is already dead, and being eaten by vultures, not much you can do now. I think it's okay to feed ... But some days, when there was a bad storm outside, you'd look out your little window....  And if he asks why God is crying, another cute thing to tell him is "Probably because he had to fxck up someone's life again . I hope life isn't a big joke, because I don't get it.

HAARK - Belief (part 1)
